Streaming Videos

How-to guides for embedding videos from AVON and Films on Demand into a Canvas site are included on this page. In short:

  • AVON- Use "Apps" in Canvas (Called Alexander Street Video in Canvas)
  • Films on Demand- Use "Apps" in Canvas

Important note: Canvas users attempting to view embedded videos may sometimes need to login with MySLCC in the video player.

Use the links here to search for online videos through the SLCC Library, submit a request for a streaming video, or contact a librarian for help.

AVON (Academic Videos Online): Alexander Street Video App in Canvas

Tip: It's easier to search and preview films in the AVON database. Then search for the specific title in the Canvas App.

To add video from AVON to Canvas on a Page:

  1. Open a Canvas page in Edit mode
  2. Look for the electrical plug "Apps" icon in the edit tool bar
  3. Select "Alexander Street Video" from the list of options
  4. Search for a specific film title or subject area using keywords. Use the filters to sort your results as needed.
  5. Select "Preview" to the right of the video descriptions if desired.
  6. Select "Embed" to add the video to your course
  7. Remember to "Save" your work on the page

 

To add video from AVON to Canvas in a Module:

  1. In Canvas, select "Add Item" from the Module view
  2. Select "External Tool" from the dropdown menu
  3. Select "Alexander Street Video" from the list of External Tool options
  4. Search for a topic or subject area using keywords. Use the filters to sort your results as needed.
  5. Select "Preview" to the right of the video descriptions if desired. (Be patient, these videos can take awhile to load.) 
  6. Select "Embed" to add the video to your course
  7. If desired, scroll or tab down to the "Title" field and rename the list something meaningful (i.e. "Unit 3 Video" or "Cold War Video Clip"). If you skip this step, your module component will retain the name "Films on Demand."
  8. Select "Add Item"
