COVID-19 Health Disparities Research Help

The resources and tips on this page should help with the semester paper in some sections based on Paul Farmer's claims that income and social inequalities have health implications.

Because COVID-19 data collection has slowed and is no longer tracked the way it was during the height of the pandemic, many of these links look at cumulative data through spring of 2023. That should be okay!

The content on these sites frequently changes, so if a link doesn't work as expected, search the internet for the title of the link, move on to another, copy the URL into The Wayback Machine to see what it looked like before, or reach out for help!

Coronavirus in the U.S.: Latest Map and Case Counts (New York Times)
A great option to find county-level cumulative data using the Maps and State Trends sections. No account needed.

Find the state and counties of interest using this tool to see a visual of case rates, deaths, and more COVID-19 data.
CDC Data Tracker: Covid Vaccinations by County
Use the interactive map or select specific counties to see data from the CDC related to Covid-19 Vaccinations.

County-level data on Socioeconomic Status indicators

County Health Rankings & Roadmaps: Health Data
Select a State, then a County of interest. Once you're viewing a county you can "compare counties" to look at economic, demographic, and social indicators that impact health.
United States Census Data
Search for your selected community, county, or state (e.g, Salt Lake County, UT). Select a table from the results list or choose to view the area's profile to find its demographic data. Look for "QuickFacts" where you can compare county level data if needed.

From HealthySaltLake.org, this saved report includes all economy indicators for all zip codes in Salt Lake County. You can remove the zip codes you don't need and re-run the search! This linked report does not capture COVID-19 data, just economical data (and they have other indicators you may want too).

Utah-specific: Build your own report with COVID-19 data such as number of cases, number of tests, and vaccines received. This goes to County level but not zip code level.
Utah Coronavirus Case Counts Data
Scroll down on the page to find a graph with case counts at more of a county level. For example, Summit County vs. Salt Lake County. Then you could look up economic indicators (income, poverty levels, etc.) and make some comparisons in your paper.

From the Utah Department of Health, there are several health equity reports related to COVID-19 that may provide state-level context.

CDC COVID Data Tracker
Updated twice per week, track COVID-19 statistics in the US. The "Health Equity Data" and "Demographic Trends" menu options might be most helpful for this assignment. Also try "View Trends" or some of the Maps near the bottom.
