STEM Summer Bridge

This guide introduces STEM Summer Bridge students to the SLCC Library.

Navigating the Research Process

When you get an assignment that requires you to use sources (information outside of your textbook), you'll typically go through a process that includes six common elements. We call this the research process, and Library Services is here to support you in every step! The steps are:

  1. Exploring the background of a topic
  2. Developing a topic
  3. Finding sources
  4. Evaluating sources
  5. Using and citing sources
  6. Creating new knowledge

Keep reading to learn more about each of these six steps.

1. Explore Background

Every research project starts with gathering basic information on a potential topic. Use this stage of the research process to find an overview of a topic that interests you and its main concepts or issues.

2. Develop a Topic

After you select a topic, develop it to make sure it has an appropriate scope. Think about what specifically interests you about the topic. Is there something you'd like to learn or a problem you're trying to answer?

3. Find Sources

Information can come from anywhere: social media, blogs, books, academic journal articles, magazine or newspaper articles, and more. The types of information you need depends on your topic.

The SLCC Library provides FREE access to millions of journal, magazine, and newspaper articles, along with books, streaming films, and more. To explore them, visit the "What We Do in Your Classes" page.

4. Evaluate Sources

How you evaluating a source depends on why and how you want to use its information. We encourage you to think critically about all information, regardless of where you find it. Want to hone this skill? Ask a librarian!

5. Use and Cite Sources

Using and citing sources in your work allows you to strengthen it with credible information, identify contributions to research, and point your readers toward more information on your topic. For citation assistance, ask a librarian or visit the SLCC Student Writing and Reading Center.

6. Create New Knowledge

Every paper you write or project you complete creates new knowledge that you can share with others!
