ART 2330 and the Library

We're glad you chose Photography: a Cultural History for one of your classes this semester! My name is Keith, the research librarian for Communications, Media, and Arts. I worked with your professor to design this guide to help you find the credible Library resources that will make you successful in this class.

Did you know that a 2013 study found that students who use the Library had better GPAs and course completion rates than non-Library users?

Becoming familiar with how to use the Library resources will not only help you now, but it will help you in other classes, and after transferring to another college or university, you will be familiar with some of their resources also. I have worked with hundreds of students and the top thing they tell me is: I wish I had known about all of the Library's services sooner. It would have been so much easier to complete my classes.

Let's start at the beginning!

Our Locations

  • Taylorsville-Redwood Campus Library
  • South City Campus Library
  • Jordan Campus Library

Our Libraries are open throughout the semester and we even extend our hours during finals so that you can have access to study space before your tests.

Go to our Hours Page to learn our current hours.  For the main Library Page, go to the top left of this guide, SLCC Libraries Home.

Items you can borrow

Did you know that our library lends you items for free? Here's what we have:

  • Books on the shelf (you can borrow these for 28 days or longer)
  • Magazines / Journals (Aperture magazine is available in print at South / Communication Arts has an annual Photography issue)
  • DVDs (you can borrow these for 7 days
  • Textbooks for classes (you can borrow these for 24 hours at a time)
  • Laptops and Hotspots (you can borrow these for a semester but must get them at Taylorsville-Redwood Library)

Things you can do from home

Did you know that most college students and professors do their research from home or on the go? They are able to do this because our library resources are online. Here's a quick summary of things you can do from home or elsewhere online:

  • Get scholarly journal articles and others with the one-stop Summon database or use Publication Finder to search for specific journals
    • FYI: a database is simply a collection of online files that you can search. See the next section about types of Library resources.
  • Find and use Photography e-books online
  • Access journal / magazine articles on Photography History using databases, such as JSTOR and ProQuest Central, etc.
  • The Chat box at the bottom of the Library Page, or linked here, provides a way to contact a librarian for help online.

By the Way

You can always e-mail me or stop by the Library to set up a research tutoring session:
