This is the best way to find printed books (by location), some tech. e-books, some online videos (Films on Demand) and physical DVDs, etc.
Note: system is down in Summer 2022 while a new system is put in place. Ask a librarian for locations.
Use the OneSearch database also, especially for online journal articles and many more e-books and online videos, etc. Look for the search bar at the lower center of the main Library page.
You can easily find the books and media you need. Use the online catalog to find books and media that the SLCC libraries own, as well as our e-reserve collection. If the library doesn't have what you need, consider using our interlibrary loan service. You can use it to borrow items from other libraries. NOTE: system is down while switching to a new one (and to LC numbers).
A call number is the number (which usually has letters in it) or the group of letters assigned to each item in the library. Every call number is different for different items. These numbers are designed to help you find the book, video, or CD that you need.
For most books, we use the Dewey Decimal system. It assigns a different call number to each book. Use this link to learn what the numbers mean. After the number is a different number with the first letter of the author's last name in front of it. This is the "cutter number". If the book is marked "OV", it's in our oversize collection. A book with an 'R' in front of the call number is a reference book, and can't be checked out. A book with "LR" before the number belongs to our light reading section. And a number with "ATLAS" in front of it belongs to the atlas section.
Some fiction books are in the Dewey Decimal numbers. Others are in a separate collection, ordered alphabetically. Look for the "FIC" label, follwed by the cutter number. Children's books follow the same system, except that they have "CHI" in front of the number.
What about the best seller collection? In the catalog, they will have "BEST" next to the number. Non-fiction has the Dewey Numbers. Biographies have a 'B', followed by the first 3 letters of the person's last name. Fiction books have "F" in front of the first 3 letters of the author's last name.
Reserve books are classified by the class number: ENGL 1010, MATH 1050, etc.
If a book belongs to the South, Sandy, or Jordan branches, the name of the branch will appear before the call number.
Videos, DVDs, and CDs have a number assigned by the library. They are in numerical order on the shelves.
If you can't find the item, talk to the library staff. We're happy to help you find what you need.
Law books start at call number 340
