SLCC Edible Books Contest: 2022

The Markosian Library (Taylorsville Redwood Campus) is hosting this year's Edible Books Contest on April 22, 2020.

Thank you to Chef Cynthia Alberts for encouraging many of the contestants to enter and safely transporting most of the entries to the library! And a special thanks to Zahir Lawrence for his excellent photographs of the entries!

Contest Details

Who can enter?

The contest is open to current students, faculty, staff, and administrators of Salt Lake Community College. One entry will be allowed per person.

What are the criteria?

Entries must be:

  • Related to books, literature, or libraries;
  • Edible;
  • Original creations (non-commercial only). 

When and where should I drop off my entry?

Entries will be accepted between 7:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 7th at the Markosian Library main floor lobby, Taylorsville-Redwood Campus.

Please note: The Library has no facilities to hold entry items earlier than the posted entry time and no refrigeration available during the event. 

What information do I need to provide with my entry?

You'll need to complete an entry form, including: your name, SLCC status, phone number, SLCC email address, ingredient list, method of preparation, and date and time of preparation. Entry forms will be available to fill out online in advance or at drop-off. You are permitted to drop off entries for others, but be sure to have all contact information and an ingredient list to fill out the form for the person whose item is being entered. The contest is free to enter, limit one entry per person.

What will happen the day of the event?

In-person popular voting (one vote per person) will take place between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and virtual voting will be available 10:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Winners will be announced around 3:15 p.m., after the votes have been tallied. Winners do not need to be present to win. Entries are only eligible to win a single award. We will not cut or serve the cakes this year.

When should I pick up my serving plate & other items?

Items must be picked up by the end of the contest day, April 7th. The library closes at 10:00 p.m., but we would prefer to have items picked up by 5:00 p.m.

Award Categories

Winners will be selected by a popular vote for the following categories:

  • Most Literary
  • Most Artistic
  • Most Humorous
  • "Made me want to read the book"

Please note that entries are only eligible to win a single award. 


Winners of each category will receive a $40 Amazon gift card!


  • Entries are only eligible to win a single award.
  • Per IRS regulations, recipients must provide their SLCC ID# or their SSN and sign to receive the gift cards.
  • Gifts with a value of $50 or less are not taxable to the recipient.

Voting Details

Who can vote?

Anyone may vote for Edible Books award winners! 

There are four award categories, and voters may not select the same entry for multiple categories.

How to vote?

On April 7th, you may vote in-person in the Taylorsville-Redwood Campus Library between 10am and 3:00pm. Voting slips will be available by the cake displays and can be returned to the Reference Desk. 

Alternately, you may vote virtually between 10:30am and 3:00pm. See link below.

Voters may not submit both an in-person and a virtual vote.
