Journalism and Media Resources at the Library

Bryce, a student I was helping, was working on a project that required the use of news sources for opinions about current electric vehicles. He used Google and was frustrated that so many online newspapers required a paid subscription before they gave him complete articles. I mentioned to him that the Library had access to newspapers if he used one of the paid-for databases. To him this was good news!

Newspapers & Newscasts

U.S. Newsstream library database accesses many U.S. newspapers. Note that home or off-campus access to the Library databases requires a login and password, the same as that used for the Canvas login.

Here is a partial example of a local Utah newspaper article.  It's from the Salt Lake Tribune in 2024, about the idea of building a gondola to solve traffic problems in a popular skier's canyon:

Newsworthy Issues

SIRS Researcher is an easier to use source for controversial, social "Leading Issues."  The results are mostly from newspapers and popular magazines and videos with a few scholarly articles. These newspaper articles are more likely to be more credible than many you would find on the Open Web with Google, etc.  Also try the similar database: In Context: Opposing Viewpoints.

New York Times Daily Access

Daily free 24-hour access passes are available to you and faculty!  You may access this each day without paying a fee. Instructions:

The next section is about attribution or documenting sources, which is an important academic standard.
