COMM 1270: Arguments

Library services & research

COMM 1270 and the Library

We're glad you chose Argumentation for one of your classes this semester! My name is Keith and I am the research librarian for Communications, Media, and Arts. I worked with your professor to design this page to help you find the Library resources that will make you successful in this class.

Did you know that a 2013 study found that students who use the Library had better GPAs and course completion rates than non-Library users?

Becoming familiar with how to use the Library resources will not only help you now, but when transferring to another college or university, you will be familiar with some of their resources also. I have worked with hundreds of students and the top thing they tell me is: I wish I had known about all of the Library's services sooner. It would have been so much easier to complete my classes, if I had known about it earlier.

Let's start at the beginning!

Our Locations

  • Taylorsville-Redwood Campus Library
  • South City Campus Library
  • Jordan Campus Library

Our Libraries are open throughout the semester and we even extend our hours during finals so that you can have access to study space before your tests. Go to our Hours Page to learn our current hours and exact locations.

Items you can borrow

Did you know that our library lends you items for free?  And return them at any location. Here's what we have:

  • Laptops (you can borrow these for a semester but must get them at the Taylorsville-Redwood Library)
  • WiFI Hotspots (you can borrow these for a semester but must get them at the Taylorsville-Redwood Library)
  • DVDs (you can borrow these for 7 days)
  • Books in our Collection (you can borrow these for 28 days)
  • Textbooks (you can borrow these for 24 hours at a time, if we have it)

Things you can do from home

Did you know that most college students and professors do their research from home or on the go? They are able to do this because our library resources are online. Here's a quick summary of things you can do online:

  • Access newspapers for FREE. Use the New York Times daily pass or access with a database.
  • Find peer-reviewed sources and e-books in our comprehensive Summon database.
    • FYI: a database is simply a collection of files that you can search.  See Summon search box in Topics section of this guide.
  • Learn about current newsworthy items in SIRS Researcher and In Context Opposing Viewpoints (see more in Topics and Databases).
